Overview of UBU's projects
UBUs main activities are the development projects that it is responsible for. The work is organised in groups with a project leader, who is responsible to the board. A Project Coordination Group (PG), consisting of the project leaders and other resource persons. PG is a quality assurance function, which support the board's responsibility towards the projects. It is meeting every 3 months. Currently PG is preparing guidelines for preparing and managing projects. UBU use to send staff on review missions and technical inputs, as well as students and interns to its projects. Jeevandhara, West Bengal, India The project works in North and South-24-Parganas with improving living conditions for the poorest, with a focus on restricting diseases related to poor water supply, sanitation and hygiene behaviour. The project is carried out by JGVK together with other local organisations in a network. Particularly subjects addressed are hygiene promotion, the arsenic and bacteria in drinking water and implementation of toilets. MEWIWASU, Tanzania UBU is currently preparing an application for a project in 6 villages near Arusha. The project builds on the former LML project, in which a Water utility MEWIWASU was formed. The utility manages water from a spring that deliver water to six villages. The utility faces large challenges in collecting money for the water and do necessary repairs so all villages can be supplied. This project will focus on capacity building of MEWIWASU and establishment of proper management of the water distribution. |

Guatemala project 2 The Guatemala project group from the just finished Guatemala project consider whether to apply for a second project. The evaluation of the first project showed that encouraging results were obtained in terms of establishing privately paid sanitation, but it needs a consolidation, if it should be sustainable. It has not been decided whether to go on with this project yet.

LML Project, Tanzania The project Local management of water and health in Likamba ran from 2005 to 2009 Where UBU worked with Danish PULS to support a health project in Likamba, a village of 5.000 inhabitants 25 km from Arusha. The project addressed Sanitation, Hygiene promotion, Water supply, Capacity building and local management at all levels. Link to project page |

Guatemala Project The project Capacity building in water and sanitation in La Libertad municipality, Petén was a cooperation between UBU and the Guatemalan association AGUA during 2007-2008. The basic concepts to be tested were User Paid Sanitation and a Demand Responsive Approach to rural sanitation, together combining to create a concept for sustainable Self Moving Sanitation. |

Arsenic Project, West Bengal, India This project ran 2004-2007 and dealt with the problem of arsenic contamination of the drinking water in North-24-Parganas in West Bengal. UBU and IGF in Denmark worked with JGVK and three local community development organisations. Through participatory work and a broad approach to problem solutions we introduce sustainable solutions to the arsenic problem in a number of villages, which was mapping of arsenic in private and public wells, development of community and household treatment as well as deep tube wells.
